Canada Drinking on the Ice

By: Stephanie Pugliese

Last night after winning 2-0 over Team USA, Team Canada partied like “true hockey players” with cigars, beer and of course champagne.

According to Howard Berkers a report from Vancouver, the International Olympic Committee weren’t too thrilled about how the celebrations came about.

The Olympic gold medalists were still in their uniform and on the ice! Also, one of the players were underage.

Marie-Philip Poulin who scored both of the goals for Canada, is only 18, she won’t be 19 until next month. Which is the legal drinking age in British Columbia

I can definitely understand why the International Olympic Committee wasn't happy with the players drinking on the ice. It is probably seen a disrespectful to take part in an act such as drinking while still in your jersey. Not only is this act seen as disrespectful, but it also was illegal for one player in particular. Taking part in drinking while on the ice infront of their fans, while someone is underage, probably didn't help the team from a PR standpoint.

However, who cares. There are bigger things in life to worry about. The fact that the players were drinking on the ice, as I stated above, probably wasn't much of a positive from a PR perspective, but at the same time it made the team seem like a fun group of individuals. They were excited and proud of themselves so they celebrated by drinking a beer on the ice while still in their jersey. I still understand why this was seen as a problem. Yet, if this is an act that takes part once in a blue moon, I feel like it shouldn't be made into a big deal, even though one of the players was underage. One beer to celebrate a victory isn't going to hurt anyone. Again, I understand why the International Olympic Committee wasn't too thrilled with this taking place.
